Cairo for The Three Generations: a Friday-to-Monday weekend

Pyramids at the edge, a thousand minarets in between.

A weekend everyone can keep up with. Flat routes and places to sit, a boat or a funicular for the view, one highlight a day that works at eight and at eighty, and dinners with a long table.

Friday: Easy arrival

  1. Orman Garden

Flat paths, benches and fountains in a garden by the Nile, lovely for a first stroll after the flight.

  2. Felucca on the Nile

A boat ride is easy for all ages, with steps down to the landing stage and a captain who will hold an arm.

  3. Abou El Sid

A long table and warm Egyptian dishes, with a lift down from the street; ask for a table downstairs.

Saturday: The pyramids by car

  1. Giza Pyramids Plateau

Hire a car with a guide to drive to the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx viewing terrace; short walks, shade and benches.

  2. Andrea Mariouteya

A long garden table by the canal, grills for the adults, rice and chicken for the children, and step-free paths.

  3. Pharaonic Village

A calm boat ride past pharaonic scenes; seats throughout and no hurry.

Sunday: One highlight: the museum

  1. Grand Egyptian Museum

Lifts and a grand staircase, wheelchairs on loan and cafés throughout; the vast halls are flat, so pace yourselves.

  2. Felfela

Sit in the cool tiled rooms for falafel, kofta and rice, with plain dishes for children and a long table for six.

Monday: A garden to say goodbye

  1. Al-Azhar Park

Smooth paths, shaded benches and views; the grandparents can sit while the children run around the playgrounds.

  2. Koshary Abou Tarek

A quick simple lunch on the way out; koshary is soft food everybody likes.
