Cape Town for The Solo Traveller: a Friday-to-Monday weekend

A mountain, two oceans and a table laid for everyone.

The weekend that is entirely yours. Counters instead of tables, a morning hike before anyone is up, a gallery at opening, and the freedom to change the plan at noon.

Friday: Counters and views

  1. Greenmarket Square

A cobbled market square, and a good first walk; closed on Sunday, but open on Friday afternoon.

  2. Mojo Market

Eat at a food hall counter with a view of the cooks; there is no need to book and nobody minds a single seat.

Saturday: Mountain, then a market

  1. Table Mountain Aerial Cableway

Go up at opening, before the queues, and walk the loop trail with the clear air; the cloud usually arrives after noon.

  2. Neighbourgoods Market

Eat at the stalls and stand at a communal table; there are oysters, bread and coffee, and nobody looks at you twice.

  3. Zeitz MOCAA

The largest museum of contemporary African art, in a former grain silo; the atrium alone is worth the ticket.

Sunday: The peninsula by train and foot

  1. Muizenberg Beach

Take a taxi to Muizenberg and walk the coloured bathing huts; the water is warmer than on the Atlantic side.

  2. Olympia Café & Deli

Sit at the counter and watch the oven; the menu is short and the bread is the best on the peninsula.

  3. Boulders Beach

Penguins on the boardwalk and in the sand; allow an hour and go to the far end where it is quiet.

Monday: A gallery at opening

  1. Iziko South African Museum

Whale skeletons and rock art, and the Planetarium next door; it is quiet in the first hour after opening.

  2. Truth Coffee Roasting

Sit at the bar and watch the roaster; the breakfast is large, and the staff are fast.
