Cape Town for The Three Generations: a Friday-to-Monday weekend

A mountain, two oceans and a table laid for everyone.

A weekend everyone can keep up with. Flat routes and places to sit, a boat or a funicular for the view, one highlight a day that works at eight and at eighty, and dinners with a long table.

Friday: A flat evening by the harbour

  1. V&A Waterfront

Level pavements, benches and a lift to every level; watch the harbour seals and the boats from the quay.

  2. Cape Town Fish Market

A long table with sushi and fried fish, and a children's menu; step-free and early enough for the little ones.

Saturday: The cableway

  1. Table Mountain Aerial Cableway

The cable car is step-free and the top has paved paths with benches; go early, the cloud arrives later.

  2. Silvertree Restaurant

A long lunch on the terrace, with a menu for children and a shady lawn for the youngest.

  3. Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden

Take the garden shuttle, the Braille trail and the canopy walkway; gentle paths, and plenty of benches.

Sunday: Peninsula by bus

  1. City Sightseeing hop-on hop-off

An open-top bus with commentary and a stop at every highlight; the lower deck is accessible and stops are close to the sights.

  2. Jonkershuis Constantia

A long table under the oaks, with Cape Malay dishes that suit all ages; the lawn is flat and the staff are patient.

  3. Boulders Beach

Penguins from a boardwalk with ramps; stay on the walkway at the viewing deck, an easy twenty minutes.

Monday: Time for a quiet morning

  1. Two Oceans Aquarium

Step-free, with lifts and a big kelp tank; allow ninety minutes and sit in the cafe at the end.

  2. Den Anker

Belgian mussels and chips in a bright room facing the harbour; step-free and good for a family table.
