Dakar for The Family Explorers: a Friday-to-Monday weekend
Atlantic light, Gorée's ferry, and a city that dances at midnight.
A weekend the children will remember and the parents will survive. Short walks between real highlights, a boat or a tram instead of a museum queue, dinners at six, and room to run.
Friday: Sand and pirogues
- Plage de Ngor
A calm sheltered beach with shallow water, sand to dig and a handful of fishing boats for the children to watch.
- Île de Ngor
The five-minute pirogue to Ngor Island is a real boat ride, and the island has car-free lanes and murals to explore.
- Le Bideew Bi
Early dinner on the sand: grilled fish, chips and rice, with the children free to run before bed.
Saturday: The island of Gorée
- Gorée ferry
The ferry takes twenty minutes; children get a boat ride, and the island is car-free and small enough for short legs.
- Musée de la Femme Henriette Bathily
A small, calm museum in a colonial house; older children will find the story of the island's women interesting.
- Chevalier de Boufflers
Lunch in a courtyard with fish, chicken and chips; the staff are patient with families.
- Plage de Gorée
A small sand beach beside the ferry quay where children can paddle while adults rest under the trees.
Sunday: Park and monument
- Parc de Hann
The Hann forest park has shaded paths, a small zoo and picnic space; bring water and arrive early before the heat.
- Monument de la Renaissance Africaine
Children enjoy the lift up the giant statue; the viewing platform has safe railings, and the steps afterwards are manageable.
- Le Phare des Mamelles
An early dinner at the lighthouse with the sea below; it is quiet, simple and child friendly.
Monday: Last morning
- Café de Rome
Pastries and hot chocolate before the airport; the café is calm and the staff cheerful with children.
- Place de l'Indépendance
Space to run on the open square and see the city's old buildings with a short walk.
