Dakar for The Three Generations: a Friday-to-Monday weekend
Atlantic light, Gorée's ferry, and a city that dances at midnight.
A weekend everyone can keep up with. Flat routes and places to sit, a boat or a funicular for the view, one highlight a day that works at eight and at eighty, and dinners with a long table.
Friday: Easy evening
- Corniche Ouest
A flat, paved sea walk with benches along the way, and an easy drive between stops; no steps and a good breeze.
- Mosquée de la Divinité
View the mosque from the road above, which is step free, and watch the sun set from the car park or the benches.
- Le Phare des Mamelles
An early dinner at the lighthouse restaurant, quiet with a view; the tables are large enough for the whole family.
Saturday: Monument and museum
- Monument de la Renaissance Africaine
A lift takes you to the top of the statue, which suits grandparents; the observation platform has seats and railings.
- Musée des Civilisations noires
A single flat, air-conditioned building with lifts and benches in the galleries and a good café.
- Chez Loutcha
A long late lunch around a big table, thieboudienne for sharing, with plenty of room for a pushchair.
Sunday: Gorée, by ferry
- Gorée ferry
The ferry has a covered lower deck for those who prefer shade; the quay is step free, though the island lanes are sandy.
- Chevalier de Boufflers
A lunch in a shaded courtyard with fish and chicken to suit every age, and plenty of time to talk.
- Plage de Gorée
A small beach by the quay where children paddle and grandparents sit under the trees, then board the ferry back.
Monday: Gentle goodbye
- Café de Rome
A relaxed breakfast with pastries and coffee at a calm table before the airport.
- Place de l'Indépendance
A short stroll round the shaded square with benches, flat paving and no traffic in the middle.
