Algiers for The Three Generations: a Friday-to-Monday weekend

El Bahdja, the white city on its amphitheatre of hills.

A weekend everyone can keep up with. Flat routes and places to sit, a boat or a funicular for the view, one highlight a day that works at eight and at eighty, and dinners with a long table.

Friday: Gardens and a bench

  1. Jardin d'Essai du Hamma

Flat, shaded avenues with many benches, ideal for slow walkers. Look for the dragon trees and the pond.

  2. La Grande Poste

A short stop at the white post office. Steps and a lift at the side; the grandparents will enjoy the hall.

  3. Family dinner at Brasserie des Facultés

A long table of grilled chicken, merguez and fries, and plenty of room for everyone. Book ahead for a big group.

Saturday: The memorial and its lift

  1. Maqam Echahid

Take the lift up the three concrete palm fronds for a view over the whole bay. Wide plaza, flat ground, benches everywhere.

  2. Garden Restaurant Al Boustane

A long lunch at a garden restaurant in the Riadh El Feth complex, with grilled dishes to share. Ask for a table with room to spare for chairs and a wheelchair.

  3. Musée National du Moudjahid

The independence war museum beneath the memorial, cool and flat, with seating in each hall. A good place for the grandparents' memories.

Sunday: Sunday by the sea

  1. Promenade des Sablettes

A flat seafront promenade with benches and playgrounds. Walk slowly and let the children run ahead.

  2. Restaurant Aux Sablettes

A family lunch by the sea at Les Sablettes: grilled fish or chicken at a long table, with the promenade for a walk afterwards. Order the fish by weight and ask the price first.

  3. Parc zoologique de Ben Aknoun

Shaded paths past big cats and primates; the lower paths are easy for strollers. Take a taxi to the gate and rest often.

Monday: A last easy morning

  1. Notre-Dame d'Afrique

Drive up to the basilica and sit on the terrace. Flat and open, with benches and a view of the bay.

  2. Musée National du Bardo

A small museum with a tiled courtyard, easy for all ages. Spend an hour and rest on the benches.

  3. Le Audin

A last family lunch a few minutes from Place Audin, with room for a big table. Order a few dishes to share and keep the afternoon free for the airport.
