Tunis for The Family Explorers: a Friday-to-Monday weekend
Whitewashed hills, a medina of domes, and Carthage under the pines.
A weekend the children will remember and the parents will survive. Short walks between real highlights, a boat or a tram instead of a museum queue, dinners at six, and room to run.
Friday: Park and pizza
- Parc du Belvédère
A hilltop park with a lake, playgrounds and a small zoo; children can run before the evening.
- Le Grillon
A family dinner of grills and couscous in a lively room that does not mind noise; early service suits children.
Saturday: Roman ruins and the sea
- Antonine Baths
Roman baths by the sea where children can run through arches and find sea views from the top.
- Le Golfe
Fish and chips of the Mediterranean sort, in a relaxed restaurant on the village's edge.
- Gammarth beach
A sandy beach a short taxi from Sidi Bou Said, with shallow water for paddling and ice cream stalls on the sand.
Sunday: Discover and play
- Cité des Sciences de Tunis
Hands-on science exhibits and a planetarium; older children can spend a morning here.
- Marché Central de Tunis
Lunch from the market's stalls: fricassé rolls and fresh fruit near the hall.
- Sidi Bou Said village
Cobbled lanes where children can wander between blue doors and ice cream sellers; avoid the midday heat.
Monday: Last stroll
- Avenue Habib Bourguiba
The wide avenue with its cafés and a clock tower; an easy walk before the flight.
- Café des Nattes
A last mint tea and doughnuts on the mats of the famous café; children usually love bambalouni.
