Tunis for The Thrill Seekers: a Friday-to-Monday weekend
Whitewashed hills, a medina of domes, and Carthage under the pines.
You see a city from its hills, its water and its bike lanes. Early starts, real sweat, a hike or a paddle out of town, and the best recovery meals in the place.
Friday: Shake out the flight
- Parc du Belvédère
Run the loop path round the hilltop park above the city; the tracks climb gently and give a view over the lake and rooftops.
- Le Grillon
A busy old-school place for fast grills and a cold beer; come hungry, the portions are big and the staff are quick.
Saturday: Mountain and sea
- Jebel Boukornine National Park
Hike the ridge trails of the national park above Hammam Lif; start early, bring water, and look for the views across the whole gulf.
- Dar Belhadj
A recovery meal of grilled fish and couscous after the hike; no menu theatre, just big plates close to the market.
- Gammarth beach
Swim and paddle off the sandy coast north of La Marsa as the afternoon wind drops; rent a board at the beach clubs.
Sunday: Ruins at pace
- La Marsa corniche
Run the corniche from La Marsa towards Sidi Bou Said, cooling down in the village before the crowds arrive.
- Byrsa Hill
Climb the hill of Carthage's citadel on foot from the port, then drop through the excavations of the Punic quarter.
- Café des Nattes
Refuel on mint tea and grilled sandwiches in the famous café on the village's main lane.
Monday: Last leg
- Antonine Baths
Run the shore path past the Antonine Baths and into the ruins; empty at this hour and cooler by the sea.
- Marché Central de Tunis
Eat breakfast standing at the central market: a fricassé roll, fresh dates and an olive oil tasting along the stalls.
