Zanzibar for The Three Generations: a Friday-to-Monday weekend

Cloves, coral, and a town of carved doors.

A weekend everyone can keep up with. Flat routes and places to sit, a boat or a funicular for the view, one highlight a day that works at eight and at eighty, and dinners with a long table.

Friday: Flat and easy

  1. Forodhani Gardens

The seafront gardens are flat, shady and have benches throughout; the grandparents can sit while children run, and a vendor sells fresh coconut.

  2. Old Fort

The fort's courtyard is largely level with a ramp at the gate; the ramparts have steps, so skip them.

  3. Mercury's Restaurant

An early family dinner on the seafront with a ground-floor table and a menu of grilled fish and simple dishes; the staff will find a quiet corner.

Saturday: Tortoises by taxi and boat

  1. Prison Island (Changuu)

A short boat ride to see giant tortoises; the jetty has a few steps and a sand landing, so the oldest travellers may prefer to stay on the boat.

  2. Lazuli

A relaxed lunch back in town at a ground-floor café with fruit juices, pancakes and simple dishes; seats for everyone.

  3. Cape Town Fish Market

An early dinner by the water at the open-air grill; the tables are on one level and the menu has something for everyone.

Sunday: Spices without stairs

  1. Spice farm tour at Kizimbani

A taxi to the spice farm, where paths are flat and guides pick fruit and spices to pass round; benches in the shade for those who tire.

  2. Lukmaan Restaurant

A long lunch at a ground-floor table with chapati, biryani and curries to share; plates are big and low-priced.

  3. Sunset dhow cruise

A sunset dhow ride from the jetty; the boarding plank is narrow, so the helpers will give a hand to the less steady.

Monday: A short, gentle goodbye

  1. Peace Memorial Museum

A quiet museum on a few levels, with an attendant who will help; it tells the island's history in clear, short rooms.

  2. Forodhani Gardens

A final slow loop of the gardens with a coconut, and the souvenir stalls close at hand; everything is on one level.

  3. Zanzibar Coffee House

A last long family lunch at a ground-floor table in the old house; the menu is simple and the staff patient.
