Buenos Aires for The Family Explorers: a Friday-to-Monday weekend

Faded marble, bandoneón, and smoke off the grill.

A weekend the children will remember and the parents will survive. Short walks between real highlights, a boat or a tram instead of a museum queue, dinners at six, and room to run.

Friday: Lake and gardens

  1. Rosedal de Palermo

A rose garden with a small lake where you can rent paddle boats. Easy flat paths for scooters, and a snack kiosk at the bridge.

  2. Jardín Japonés

A Japanese garden with a pond of koi and a small tea house. Children feed the carp, and the paths are short and flat.

  3. Early dinner at Pizzería Güerrín

A slice at the counter or a table for the family. Fast service and big slices, and in bed by eight.

Saturday: Dinosaurs and a ship

  1. Ecoparque Interactivo

The former zoo, now a green park with rescued animals. Keep to the flat paths and visit the old buildings at the north end.

  2. Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales

Dinosaur skeletons and a giant whale. Children love the Patagonian dinosaurs, and it is calm enough for a long visit.

  3. Dinner at La Parolaccia

A big Italian-style dinner by the docks, with pasta for children. Eat at six and walk the dock after.

Sunday: Delta by train

  1. Tren de la Costa

A scenic train along the river from Olivos to Tigre, with old stations and gardens. Children love it, and it is easy with strollers.

  2. Lunch at Puerto de Frutos

Parrilla stalls, wicker and mate gourds at the old fruit port. A casual lunch where children can wander.

  3. Parque de la Costa

An old-school amusement park with gentle rides for small children and a quiet delta view. Buy the all-rides ticket.

Monday: A last park

  1. Reserva Ecológica Costanera Sur

Flat reed paths by the river, with swans and turtles. Bring a hat and water; there is no shade and a long walk back.

  2. Fragata Sarmiento

A tall sailing ship from 1899, now a museum. Children climb the decks and look at the sailors' hammocks, and it costs almost nothing.

  3. Puerto Cristal

A dockside restaurant with a long menu, so there is milanesa for the children and fish or a grill for the parents. Eat by the water, then walk the old docks.
