Buenos Aires for The Three Generations: a Friday-to-Monday weekend

Faded marble, bandoneón, and smoke off the grill.

A weekend everyone can keep up with. Flat routes and places to sit, a boat or a funicular for the view, one highlight a day that works at eight and at eighty, and dinners with a long table.

Friday: Flat paths and a tea table

  1. Rosedal de Palermo

A rose garden with flat paths, many benches and a lake with paddle boats. Easy for strollers and wheelchairs.

  2. Jardín Japonés

Short, flat paths around a pond of koi, and a tea house to rest in. Children feed the fish.

  3. Early dinner at La Parolaccia

A big Italian-style dinner for the whole table. Book a long table and eat early.

Saturday: A ship and a river

  1. Fragata Sarmiento

A tall sailing ship from 1899, now a museum. The decks are flat, and the gangway is short.

  2. Puerto Cristal

A long lunch on the Puerto Madero docks with a wide menu: milanesa for the grandchildren and a grill for the grandparents. Book a table if the party is large.

  3. Reserva Ecológica Costanera Sur

Flat reed paths by the river. Walk a short loop with swans and turtles, and rest on the benches.

Sunday: The train to Tigre

  1. Tren de la Costa

A scenic train along the river to Tigre. Sit by the window, and the stations have ramps.

  2. Lunch at Puerto de Frutos

Parrilla stalls at the old fruit port. A long lunch table, with an easy flat market after.

  3. Tigre river launch

A one-hour boat trip on the delta channels, with houses on stilts. Flat boarding and comfortable seats.

Monday: Books and a coffee

  1. El Ateneo Grand Splendid

A 1919 theatre turned bookshop. Coffee on the old stage, with benches and a lift.

  2. Café Tortoni

Under the stained glass since 1858. Order submarinos for the children and sit at a big table.

  3. Farewell lunch at La Biela

A long table outside under the great gomero tree, with lomito sandwiches for the grown-ups and ice cream for the children to finish.
