Copenhagen for The Thrill Seekers: a Friday-to-Monday weekend

Copper roofs, bicycles, and the long northern dusk.

You see a city from its hills, its water and its bike lanes. Early starts, real sweat, a hike or a paddle out of town, and the best recovery meals in the place.

Friday: Ski on the power station

  1. CopenHill

An artificial ski slope and an 85-metre climbing wall on the roof of the waste-to-energy plant; an hour's ski pass with kit, the city below the chairlift.

  2. Islands Brygge Havnebadet

Jump into the harbour where the city does, cold and clean, with the Christianshavn spires across the water; the five-metre tower is open in summer.

  3. Warpigs

Texas barbecue by the pound and the Mikkeller and Three Floyds taps in a meatpacking hall; the brisket runs out, so get there before nine.

Saturday: Deer park and the rollercoaster

  1. Dyrehaven trail run

Twenty minutes on the S-train to the royal deer park: a ten-kilometre loop on gravel past two thousand deer and the hunting lodge on its hill.

  2. Bellevue Strand

Arne Jacobsen's striped lifeguard towers on a beach the city swims from all year; a cold dip after the run, then the kiosk's hot dog.

  3. Gasoline Grill

A burger counter in a petrol station that closes when the patties run out; the butter burger and the fries are the recovery meal, standing up.

Sunday: Walls and the Demon

  1. Blocs & Walls

A climbing gym in a shipyard shed on Refshaleøen, rope walls to fifteen metres and a bouldering cave; the harbour bus gets you there by nine.

  2. Tivoli Gardens, Dæmonen and Vertigo

The 1843 garden's rides: a looping coaster, a plane that spins at 100 km/h, and the 1914 wooden coaster with a brakeman; check the season dates.

  3. Pluto

A loud room with a long bar and sharing plates built for a group that has queued for rides all afternoon; the beef tartare and the fried chicken.

Monday: The harbour ring and the kayak

  1. Dawn run over the harbour bridges

The harbour loop: Olafur Eliasson's circle bridge, the Inner Harbour bridge and the Bryggebroen, six kilometres before the cyclists own them.

  2. Kayak Republic

An hour's kayak through the Christianshavn canals under the low bridges, the only way to see the city from below.

  3. Hija de Sanchez

Rosio Sanchez's taco stand in the meatpacking district, three tacos from nixtamalised corn and a horchata before the metro to the airport.
