Seville for The Family Explorers: a Friday-to-Monday weekend

Orange trees, bitter sweets, and a long slow dusk.

A weekend the children will remember and the parents will survive. Short walks between real highlights, a boat or a tram instead of a museum queue, dinners at six, and room to run.

Friday: Pedal carriages and the river

  1. Parque de María Luisa by pedal carriage

Hire a four-seat pedal carriage at Plaza de España and pedal the park's avenues; ducks, fountains and a tiled bench for every province.

  2. Mercado Lonja del Barranco

Dinner at six is possible here when the kitchens elsewhere are shut: stalls under the iron roof and a terrace on the river.

  3. River cruise from the Torre del Oro

An hour on the river from the Torre del Oro under the bridges, benches on deck, back before the light goes.

Saturday: Peacocks and sharks

  1. Real Alcázar gardens

Peacocks, a hedge maze, a pool of carp and a garden café; the state rooms are optional for the children, the maze is not.

  2. Mercado de Triana

A lunch of fried fish cones from the market stalls, eaten on the river wall outside, then the siesta.

  3. Acuario de Sevilla

The aquarium on the Delicias dock: a shark tunnel and Magellan's route told in fish, an hour and a half in the cool.

Sunday: Up top and on the water

  1. Metropol Parasol

The walkway on top of the timber mushrooms, railings all the way; the Antiquarium below has Roman mosaics for the ones who like floors.

  2. Bar El Comercio

Churros and chocolate at the 1904 bar for a late breakfast, the children allowed to dip whatever they want.

  3. Rowing boats on the Plaza de España

Rent a rowing boat on the plaza's canal, four to a boat, the tiled bridges low enough to duck under.

Monday: Ramps and a playground

  1. The Giralda

The bell tower has ramps, not stairs, so the whole family climbs; count the thirty-five and shout at the top.

  2. Jardines de Murillo

A playground under the palms at the edge of Santa Cruz, benches for the parents, a last run before the bus.

  3. Bodega Santa Cruz Las Columnas

Montaditos the size of a child's hand, a plate of chips and a juice at the bar, out in half an hour.
