Lisbon for The Thrill Seekers: a Friday-to-Monday weekend

Seven hills, one white light, and the Tagus below.

You see a city from its hills, its water and its bike lanes. Early starts, real sweat, a hike or a paddle out of town, and the best recovery meals in the place.

Friday: The river at speed

  1. Cycle the riverside to Belém

Hire a bike at Cais do Sodré and ride the flat river path to the Torre de Belém and back before the light goes, twenty kilometres with no hills.

  2. Pilar 7 Bridge Experience

Ride the lift inside a pier of the 25 de Abril bridge to a glass floor in the steelwork, 80 metres up, the traffic humming through your shoes.

  3. Cervejaria Ramiro

Recovery: tiger prawns, clams and the prego to finish, elbow to elbow with cooks on their night off; the queue is part of it.

Saturday: Surf and the cape

  1. Surf lesson at Praia de Carcavelos

Twenty minutes by train from Cais do Sodré to the city's surf beach; two hours in a wetsuit with a school that keeps beginners on the inside.

  2. Mercado da Vila

Lunch at the Cascais market stalls, grilled fish and a juice, then bus 403 from the station out towards the cape.

  3. Praia da Ursa trail

From the westernmost point of Europe the Ursa path drops steeply to sea stacks and a beach with nobody on it; back up is the workout.

Sunday: Sintra on foot

  1. Castelo dos Mouros

Forty minutes by train, then hike the Santa Maria path up through the forest rather than take the bus; the ramparts are the reward.

  2. Quinta da Regaleira

Descend the Initiation Well's nine spiralling levels and crawl the tunnels out through the grotto, which is the fun part of the estate.

  3. Cervejaria Trindade

Steaks and seafood in the tiled 1836 beer hall of the Trindade convent, the portions designed for a day on a hill.

Monday: Forest and the arch

  1. Parque Florestal de Monsanto

The city's forest park is ten minutes by taxi: trail loops under pines with the bridge below; run it before the airport and shower after.

  2. Arco da Rua Augusta

A lift then a spiral stair to the top of the triumphal arch for the whole Baixa grid laid out below, five minutes from the metro.

  3. Time Out Market

A last plate at the counters under the iron trusses of the Mercado da Ribeira, then the Aerobus from outside Cais do Sodré.
