Prague for The Three Generations: a Friday-to-Monday weekend

A hundred spires, and the river that reflects them.

A weekend everyone can keep up with. Flat routes and places to sit, a boat or a funicular for the view, one highlight a day that works at eight and at eighty, and dinners with a long table.

Friday: The square at the hour

  1. Old Town Square

The astronomical clock's apostles at the hour, the Týn towers and the Hus memorial steps to sit on; a flat square with a bench for everyone.

  2. Old Town Hall tower by lift

A lift inside the tower for the grandparents and the ramp around the top for the children, the red roofs and the castle in one turn.

  3. U Pinkasů

Pilsner has been poured here since 1843; a ground-floor room, long tables, goulash and a children's plate of dumplings, the garden in summer.

Saturday: The castle by tram

  1. St Vitus Cathedral and the Old Royal Palace

Tram 22 to the Pražský hrad stop avoids the steps; the courtyards are flat, the cathedral has a ramp, and the guards change on the hour.

  2. Lobkowicz Palace Café

Lunch on the palace terrace at the bottom of the castle, soup and a strudel with the city below, before the funicular-free walk down to the tram.

  3. Wallenstein Garden

The baroque garden at the foot of the hill, flat gravel paths, peacocks for the children and a wall of fake stalactites to find faces in.

Sunday: The boat to Troja

  1. Prague Steamboat Company to Troja

Seventy-five minutes downstream on a steamer with seats and a bar, under all the bridges to the zoo landing; everyone sits, nobody walks.

  2. Restaurace Troja

A sit-down lunch in Troja between the boat and the château gardens, with Czech dishes on the menu. Reserve a Sunday table for the whole family.

  3. Troja Château gardens

The baroque palace garden next to the zoo, a flat parterre with orange trees, a maze for the children and benches by the fountains.

Monday: Kampa and a pub by the bridge

  1. Kampa Island

The island's lawn and the mill wheel on the Čertovka, Černý's crawling babies to climb on, and a bench facing the Charles Bridge arches.

  2. Museum Kampa

A small modern-art museum in the old mill with a lift to every floor and a terrace over the river; an hour is plenty.

  3. Kolkovna Olympia

A big pub at street level by the Legion Bridge, roast duck for the table and pancakes for the children, the tram stop outside the door.
